Roma Auskalnyte, Suvi Sysi, Inma Herrera: Sanctuary

Forum Box

A sanctuary is a place of safety, refuge and privacy. Its Latin etymology and meaning, sanctu-arium, takes us also to conceive it as a container where to keep something inside; protected.

Sanctuary presents the works of visual artists Roma Auskalnyte, Suvi Sysi, and Inma Herrera. The three artists share a common background in printmaking and explore the media in an interdisciplinary and expanded way, establishing dialogues with video, sculpture, installation, and performance.

The exhibition displays the new directions of their practice. The works, and their dialogue with space, become the vessel for a set of unanswered questions that explore phenomenologically, conceptually, and poetically our relationship to body, materials, and images.

Young Designer of the Year 2021: Hanna Anonen

Designer Hanna Anonen is Design Forum Finland’s Young Designer of the Year 2021.

Hanna Anonen (b. 1987) is a versatile designer whose portfolio covers a wide range from spatial and graphic design to interior decoration products, such as furniture and smaller items. The pieces, which are often made from painted wood, are characterised by bright colours, unexpected ideas and playfulness.

Hanna Anonen’s bold and unique style and her expert skills have gained her assignments from many Finnish brands. Her pieces are reinventing the image of Finnish modern design and have received international attention. Thanks to her strong identity as a designer, Hanna Anonen is paving the way for other young designers.

The prize sum is €5,000 and in 2018–2022 it also includes participation in IF Studios, the artist-in-residence program of the Finnish Institute in France in Paris. The IF Studios residence program supports the internationalization of Finnish artists, curators and other creative professionals in France.

The prize jury of 2021 consisted of CEO Petteri Kolinen / Design Forum Finland, Senior Lecturer Merja Kosonen / Metropolia AMK, Design Director Antti Olin / Isku Oy and Director Johanna Råman / Institut finlandais.

The Kaj Franck Design Prize 2021: Johanna Gullichsen

Textile designer Johanna Gullichsen receives the Kaj Franck Design Prize of 2021.

Johanna Gullichsen is known for her interior textiles that combine traditional weaves. She has also made determined and systematic efforts to update traditional textile types and patterns. An appreciation of natural materials, handicrafts and the preservation of the weaving tradition is clearly visible in the textiles designed by Johanna Gullichsen.

Johanna Gullichsen has managed to combine her artistic and creative work with sustainable serial production. The textiles produced under Johanna Gullichsen brand are woven in Finland from natural materials, and their carefully considered colour combinations are a natural addition to Finnish interior and furniture design. The patterns are clear and distinguishable, yet looking new, and the quality of craftsmanship and materials is always impeccable. The unique approach has also resulted in collaborative projects with domestic and foreign designers and companies. Johanna Gullichsen’s designs are a strong continuation of the Finnish tradition of textile art.

The members of the Kaj Franck Design Prize jury of 2021 were CEO Petteri Kolinen / Design Forum Finland, Chief Design Offícer Hanna Harris / City of Helsinki, clothing designer Anna Ruohonen, CEO Päivi Tahkokallio / Tahkokallio Design+ and designer, Professor Heikki Orvola.

The prize sum is €10,000. The Kaj Franck Design Prize was established in 1992 by Design Forum Finland and it is funded by the Finnish Fair Foundation.

Anna Salmi: Watermelon Sugar

Specializing in animated and editorial illustrations, Anna Salmi (b. 1992) combines digital and traditional painting techniques in her work. Her illustrations often feature references to pop culture mixed with an imaginary world dominated by pastel colours, glitter and powerful women. Salmi’s solo exhibition Watermelon Sugar features digital prints on textile with embroidered details.

Watermelon Sugar opens to the public on the website of the gallery on Friday, 14 May, at 12 noon. You can browse the exhibition online through pictures, texts and a podcast. One of the works in the virtual exhibition uses AR (Augmented Reality) and it has been made available for viewing through Adobe Aero mobile app. You can also experience the artworks on the spot when Galleria Kuvitus reopens its doors after a long time during the Art Fair Suomi Goes Galleries festival, held from 8–13 June.

Visiting the exhibition during COVID-19: The exhibition is open to the public during the Art Goes Galleries festival from 8–13 June or by appointment: galleria(at)kuvittajat.fi. Because our space is small, maximum of 4 visitors are admitted to the gallery at a time. Anna Rokka: She Turned Out and Tuned In

The exhibition consists of a series of newly produced installation works and sculptures that construct an emotional imagination with high pitched traces of the so often fleeting reality. There are four stories, one pink, two green and one black, which process in different ways disturbing phenomena. In the creation of the green fountain installation She crawl up inside my arms like a spider (part of song lyric by Busy Signal), Rokka reflects on the obscure and unfair manufacturing process of technology products. What does it mean that everyone is in different realities? Can we even understand each other?

The new installations have been built up of materials such as rusty iron, kelp, fabric, reused parts from previous artworks and newly produced material. A part of her art shows itself through fragmentary elements where the process and wonder are still present.

Rokka’s installations are formed in direct relation to the participation of the human body. Rokka has created in this exhibition visualizations of what life could be like in a hyperreality.

Her art focuses on installation but spans also across sculpture, video installation, performance, dance and costume design. Her artistry surrounds the ideas of science fiction, transcultural issues, attitudes and womanhood.

Anna Rokka (b. 1986) was born in Delsbo Sweden, and now lives and works in Helsinki in one of the Elfvik studios. Rokka has inherited the artistry from her family, whose members have been various kinds of creators. She studied in the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. She works both alone and in collaboration with others. Rokka has been working for this exhibition in 2020–2021 with a working grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Anna Rokka has showed her works in both galleries and museums, for example Mänttä Arts Week, ARCO Art Fair Madrid (represented Sinne), Shifting Identities group exhibition at MACRO Testaccio Rome. Rokka was honored with the Raimo Utriainen Fund’s annual sculptor award in 2015.

The exhibition is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Konstsamfundet and the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.

Some of the pieces in this exhibition have been included in my previous exhibitions (”Don’t you know it” 2016, Brick lane Gallery, London).

I returned to this topic because it has been wonderful to see how attitudes towards sex and sexuality have improved. Equality and consideration towards others have increased and even though there is still work to be done it is great that we encourage each other to enjoy life.

Joy. Joy is the thing on which I wanted to work.

Especially during these times we need joy and fun in our quarantine and for the time spent at home. Adult toys are meant to bring that to our lives and they can be enjoyed alone or together. Bright colors, fun shapes and silly names are also present in my works.

I hope that my pieces make the viewer smile and laugh a little.

In my previous works I highlighted the almost abstract shape hidden behind rectangles. The idea behind this was that often we don’t want to see the sexual aspects that are right in front of our eyes.

Even then I wanted to bring forth the pointlessness of a culture of shame. The colors and shapes of toys are cheerful and fun. They are to bring joy, not shame.

Ones own sexual life is a part of the self and a life-long adventure that may change throughout the years.

Sex is fluid and it should be enjoyed in a way that suits you. That is what the name of the exhibition, Poly, celebrates: there are many ways.

In Sami Havia’s artworks, the relationship between the abstract and figurative has been wrenched into the absurd. His organic idiom hides a multitude of references and genuinely figurative elements are concealed behind and in between the abstract surfaces. Sometimes, it takes a keen eye to see them.

The human figures found in the artworks are observers who have been absorbed in the landscape. Their presentation borders on pseudo-naïve and is a perfect fit in Havia’s abstract and surreal visual expression. These figures accentuate playfulness, they are escapist passers-by of life. The visitor can empathize with and linger on their reverie.

Island of Empathy explores the relationship between human beings and nature

Island of Empathy looks into the potential of art as a means of healing individuals, but also the ills of society while researching the notions of empathy, healing, and intersubjectivity in the context of human and non-human interaction. Intersubjectivity means the interchange of conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings between two subjects facilitated by empathy, which is not only a catalyst but a vital tool in the implementation of the many processes of healing and bonding on an individual or social level. Customarily, intersubjectivity refers to human relationships, but it might be understood to appear also in relationships between human and non-human actors in a kind of ‘anthropology beyond the human’. Intersubjectivity helps us to understand each other and our different perspectives. It will carry different beings to shared futures.

The artists of Island of Empathy are: Mari Keski-Korsu, Janne Kärkkäinen, Pia Männikkö, Sara Pathirane, Leena Pukki, Julia Strand and Eero Yrjölä. The exhibition is curated by Kasia Sobucka and Merja Briñón.

The exhibition is organised both at HAA Gallery in Suomenlinna between 5 June–22 August 2021 and at Malmitalo Gallery between 10 June–20 August 2021. Island of Empathy is produced by Helsinki Artists’ Association in collaboration with London-based Arts Territory. The exhibition is supported by the City of Helsinki and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Karl Henrik Edlund: Eden

Karl Henrik Edlund’s exhibition Eden is named after his grandfather’s garden island in the Archipelago Sea, in Åland Islands, Finland. In the series, consisting of photographs taken over a course of sixteen years (2004-2019), Edlund approaches the question of how ambiguity relates to the notions of place.

The exhibition is a part of Artproof Grant Finland 2021 prize awarded to Edlund.

Hanna Galtat: Significant Symbols, Bronze sculptures

The works in the exhibition represent well-known symbols that have been in use for thousands of years. These symbols convey human knowledge and meaning. They describe notions that are subject to agreement and hence, they describe ourselves. The works are writing with which the sculptor has filled an empty space, adding the missing third dimension by completing them with her own ideas. Their dialect of form combines humour with a more serious stand on the many meanings carried by the symbols. Infinity is not the familiar and elegant but lifeless double loop but full of twists and quirks like life itself. The solid authority and poise of the Greater/Less symbol is about to crack. Approximately turns out to be a slippery tongue. In their three-dimensional forms, placed on a reflecting base, the symbols can be seen in a completely new way and the connections, dynamics and dialogue between them becomes available for examination.

The works have been moulded from wax and cast in bronze using the six-thousand-year-old cire perdue or lost-wax method. Bronze, like other metals, has always been recycled to make new items of everyday use and objects of art such as weapons, tools, church bells, statues and jewellery. In other words, the works in the exhibition are, within themselves, informed by the material and technological memory of our civilisation.

Hanna Galtat is a visual artist based in Finland and France. She has a multidisciplinary background in fine art, design and art history. Her works include sculptures, installations, printmaking and experimental textiles.

The Finnish Cultural Foundation has funded the exhibition and the creation of the works of art.

Jan Lütjohann: Things that Contain

All the stacking and piling, and stocking and storing, all the lifting and carrying, the moving and shipping and handling. All the containers of equipment, pieces of material and boxes of things essential. All the pollution and waste. At once enabling and burdening, the objects at the center of these endless logistics are both making our lives possible and weighing us down.

The exhibition touches on our daily handling of space and things, and what we make of them. At MUU Helsinki these routines materialize in an installation of wooden boxes for equipment and a stack of mill-sawn timbers. The containers have been shaped to hold objects that are either worth having, unavoidable or a burden to preserve.

The works in the exhibition are made with hand tools and pre-industrial methods, from industrially produced wood materials. The ecologically unsustainable origins of the factory-made plywood and laminated boards reveal themselves in the materials’ residual tensions.

Jan Lütjohann (*1987, Kiel) is a sculptor and educator from northern Germany who lives and works in Helsinki. His sculptures and installations take the shape of tools, equipment and workspaces. He uses pre-industrial tools and obsolete technology to contemplate on working with hands in a post-industrial society.

The exhibition has been supported by Alfred Kordelin Foundation, Svenska Kulturfonden and Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Uusimaa Regional Council of the Arts.

Marianne Huotari’s and Fanny Tavastila’s first joint exhibition Growth examines growth from different perspectives. The OHO Gallery shows a unique dialogue between painting and ceramic art. Emmu Johansson: Sparaxis Tricolor 8.6.–3.7.2021

Sparaxis tricolor is latin and means harlequin flower. A harlequin flower is a brightly-colored bulb-forming flower. Its growing time is in the spring. Its tubers lie 10 cm in the ground. When cold weather is over, the flower is brought outdoors to grow. It prefers growing in pots or in a rocky soil.

It blooms in the summer. Best spot is in the sun. It thrives approximately 8 cm away from other plants and reaches its full 25-35 cm height in a sandy, calcium rich soil.

Lifting the bulb from the ground and drying and preserving it for the winter allows another year of growth for the harlequin flower.

A harlequin (arlecchino in italian, arlequin in french) saves itself from tricky situations with odd means. It is a precursor to clowns and jesters. A harlequin’s most important duties are to entertain and to tackle themes of fear with playful and theatrical ways.

The notion of beauty includes the understanding of its fleeting nature and a feeling of its uniqueness. The best way to concretely reach it is trough music. It begins, touches and ends. Manually repeated it is new and different every time. Silence, beginning, resonance and silencing. Even if parting with it and and giving into silence happens over and over again, it doesn’t weaken the listener. Even if every flower was torn apart, life can go on after the winter, during the winter.

Dramatis Personae is a term used to mean a narrative character in a play or a short story. In the piece that play or story is the life in which the characters are the countless roles that can be found in the human mind. In the gallery 29 loud speakers are repeating all of the words in the online dictionary of the Institute for the Languages of Finland, read by the artist. Each loud speaker represents a letter of the alphabet and with all of them playing the space is filled with concepts and meaning.

A body of video works under a theme "Living spaces – space for life!"

Videokanava’s online screening on Tuesday had to be moved to 9.–10.6. due to technical problems with the pages. We apologise for any inconvenience! However, the videos are now available at www.videokanava.com until 10.6., 4pm.

On Thursday 10.6 at 4.15 pm, we will present another new screening in the Art Fair Suomi -exhibition. The exhibition is curated by visual artist Jonne Kauko (FIN).

The first “Living Spaces – Space for Life!” video exhibition of Videokanava Online Gallery starts on the opening day of Art Fair Suomi! Six different videos will be exhibited.

The artists and artworks are from Portugal, Greece, Canada, Germany, Romania, Holland and Brazil. The videos last from about 30 seconds to about 16 minutes. They deal with space from the perspective of societal, bodily, cultural, historical, ecological and spiritual experiences and analysis.

Artists: Nicole Kouts, Katja Verheul, Alisi Telengut, Silvia Amancei ja Bogdan Armanu, Pablo Koury ja Małgorzata Suś, Guilherme Bergamini.

Anna Rokka’s exhibition opens on Tuesday 8 June in Galleria Sculptor. The artist is present at the gallery from 5 pm until 7 pm.

Independent tour for children

The independent tours for children enable gallery visits according to your own schedule and with adults. At the gallery there are two different kinds of tasks for children. In the bingo younger children get to look for colours and shapes in the artworks. In the crossword puzzle children can search the pieces for words that go to the puzzle. By showing a completed task sheet to the gallery staff children will receive a sticker as a prize.

The activity is created by Eidos ry – the subject organization for art history students at University of Helsinki.

Parsa Kamehkhosh is performing outside and in the vicinity of the gallery.

Parsa Kamehkhosh is a Helsinki-based designer, visual and performance artist, born in Tehran in 1985. Through his practice, he explores the notion of aesthetic aura that appears from the proximity, juxtaposition, and joints of materials and shapes. After he moved to Finland in 2015, he got more engaged in performance art to explore the creative encounters that appear through the interactive and performative aspects of objects, and on another level, investigate the metaphysical relationship between mind and matter/performer and object. Since then, Performance art has turned to the most prominent means of self-expression, and self-study in his practice. His works have been mostly exhibited in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

Helsinki Art Walk

Helsinki Art Walk invites you to participate in a guided tour to some of the Art Fair Suomi festival’s exhibitions.

In the Art Fair Suomi edition of HAW we will visit the exhibitions of MUU Helsinki, Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius, OHO Gallery and Galleria Huuto. The guide for the Helsinki Art Walk is Jane Hughes, and the tour is in English language.

You are warmly welcome!

The guided tour will start at MUU Helsinki Contemporary Art Centre at Cable Factory, with an exhibition by Jan Lütjohann.

Next galleries and exhibiting artists are:

Queer view to Hanna Galtat's exhibition

A queer look into Hanna Galtat’s exhibition Significant Symbols.

At the queer guided tours we observe the different possible counter-normative interpretations that the viewer can have about art and for example the way it portrays humanity. Occasionally the intention and identity of an artist has lead to queer interpretations but at this tour our main focus is on the viewer and their own thoughts. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions we pose, and we invite everyone to offer their own interpretations.

Despite the viewer-centered focus, the artist of the exhibition, Hanna Galtat, is present during and after the tour and is happy to participate in the conversation.

During the music guiding we observe the affect of different soundscapes on the experience of art. How does music alter a piece – can something nice become scary or beautiful ugly? Can something still turn into fast-paced or something unknown into familiar? The tour is playful and experimental and invites discussion!

Step into the garden! – guided tour and an art workshop for children

Thu 10.6.2021 @ 09:30–10:00 • Oho Galleria

Step into the garden! is a guided tour and an art workshop for under 7-year-olds with a parent. We will get inspiration from Marianne Huotari’s floral ceramics and Fanny Tavastila’s verdant paintings and the children get to paint their own flowery garden. The art workshop will happen on the floor with the help of each parent. The event will be held twice, in Finnish and Swedish.

Due to pandemic, the registration is open for one parent and one child per family. In the workshop we will use nontoxic and water-soluble readymix paints. The painting may cause some mess, so we recommend wearing suitable clothing and an apron. There is a toilet in the gallery. There are two elevators and the prams can be left downstairs in the hall or inside on the 4th floor. Welcome!

Maimu's Art Marathon

Welcome to join Maimu Brushwood née Huolirinta’s art marathon!

Maimu will lead you from one gallery to another with an aim to visit a total of 11 galleries. A distance of approximately three kilometres will be travelled. You get to explore art while exercising. So put on your sneakers and bring along a water bottle and some adventure spirit!

We will gather at 12pm (noon) at the Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, located in the courtyard at Yrjönkatu 8–10. The tour will end at Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius, Hieralahdenranta 17.

Screen Printing Workshop - Print your own AFS Bag!

During the demonstration workshop, visitors are given the opportunity to get to know something about silkscreen printing!

Visitors are given the chance to choose and purchase a 100% cotton bag, prepare it, print it with AFS logo and making it ready to go! During this process the artist is supporting the process and is available to answer to all the questions possible.

Each bag is 20€. The studio accepts card payments.

Visitors can bring their own bags or t-shirts (preferably 100% cotton, white or black), printing price is 15€ per item.

Note: Offer limited to the existing stock.

Helsinki Art Walk

Helsinki Art Walk invites you to participate in a guided tour to some of the Art Fair Suomi festival’s exhibitions.

In the Art Fair Suomi edition of HAW we will visit the exhibitions of MUU Helsinki, Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius and Galleria Huuto. In addition there will be also a studio visit at Cable Factory. The guide for the Helsinki Art Walk is Jane Hughes, and the tour is in English language. You are warmly welcome!

Guided tour will start at MUU Helsinki Contemporary Art Centre at Cable Factory, with an exhibition by Jan Lütjohann. We will also visit Elina Brotherus studio at Cable Factory.

Next galleries and exhibiting artists are:

Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius – Aaron Hermunen,

Gallery Huuto – Okko Pöyliö, Kaisa Jussila, Marjo Levlin and Tapio Haapala.

We follow the existing Covid-19 related restrictions and recommendations and can allow 10 people to join. Registering for the tour is required. Note: The tour is full but you can sign up for the queue. Link to the registration form
