Forum Box

Forum Box is an artist-run co-operative society, founded in 1996. Its main purpose is to maintain a non-profit art space in Helsinki in order to enrich and support the Finnish cultural life. Currently Forum Box co-op has over 100 members, all of whom are prominent artists and actors in the field of Finnish contemporary art.

Forum Box aims to be a space open for all forms of art. We present contemporary artists, both Finnish and international, established and emerging. We organise each month an art exhibition and enable a variety of performing arts events to take place in our walls – live art, concerts, theatre and dance performances.

Artistic freedom, a sense of community and diversity are at the heart of Forum Box’s values.

Gallery Forum Box is partially accessible: there is a 10 cm threshold between the street and the gallery door. We have a ramp that can be used. Two out of our three exhibition spaces are located in the street level and are thus wheelchair accessible. There are 8 steps with a handrail to the Parvi exhibition space and 3 steps with no handrail to the media art space Mediabox. There is also an accessible entrance to the WC if needed. Our staff is happy to help and answer questions concerning accessibility.

Roma Auskalnyte, Suvi Sysi, Inma Herrera: Sanctuary

A sanctuary is a place of safety, refuge and privacy. Its Latin etymology and meaning, sanctu-arium, takes us also to conceive it as a container where to keep something inside; protected.

Sanctuary presents the works of visual artists Roma Auskalnyte, Suvi Sysi, and Inma Herrera. The three artists share a common background in printmaking and explore the media in an interdisciplinary and expanded way, establishing dialogues with video, sculpture, installation, and performance.

The exhibition displays the new directions of their practice. The works, and their dialogue with space, become the vessel for a set of unanswered questions that explore phenomenologically, conceptually, and poetically our relationship to body, materials, and images.

Come explore the exhibitions at Forum Box and Galleria Huuto via the virtual guided tour led by Ida Taavitsainen! The tour video will be available on the galleries’ websites as well as on social media channels during the whole Art Fair Suomi Goes Galleries event, from June 8 until June 16.

I don't understand contemporary art – guided tour

This guided tour attempts to tame contemporary art and give tips on how to approach art. The pieces present are by three young artists and form an exhibition titled Sanctuary. The participating artists are Roma Auskalnyte (Lithuania), Suvi Sysi (Finland) and Inma Herrera (Spain).

The tour is organised by Eidos ry, the association of art history students at the University of Helsinki.

Welcome to a guided gallery tour in simple Finnish!

Art Fair Suomi and Selkokulttuuri ry organise two guided gallery tours in simple Finnish. The tours will take you to the exhibitions of Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius and Forum Box.

The tour will be held in simple Finnish. Participants will also get an exhibition description text in simple Finnish in advance.

The tours are free of charge but signing up beforehand is required. Welcome!

Two exhibitions will be visited during the tour.

During the tour, participants will be guided through two exhibitions:

Where and when do the tours start?

The tours will start at 2pm and 3pm from Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius, Hietalahdenranta 17, 00180 Helsinki. The duration of the tour is approximately 45 minutes.
