Galleria Kuvitus

Galleria Kuvitus, maintained by The Finnish Illustration Association, is the only gallery in Finland focusing on showcasing the art of illustration in all its forms. Eight to ten exhibits of Finnish contemporary illustrators are shown each year at the gallery. Galleria Kuvitus has its own podcast and you can also participate most of our exhibitions virtually.

Galleria Kuvitus seeks to develop open-minded and experimental approaches to illustration and its presentation. The non-profit activities of the gallery follow the strategy of the association. We want to invest in the responsibility of our operations.

Founded in 2018, the gallery has been set up in the premises of the Finnish Illustration Association in Helsinki. The annual application period in September is open to all professional illustrators based in Finland.

ACCESSIBILITY Unfortunately Galleria Kuvitus is not wheelchair accessible. (3 steps at the entrance, door width will be added on 11 may). PETS Pets on a leash are allowed indoors. Kindly mind installations and pieces situated on the floor when visiting us with a pet. PARKING Galleria Kuvitus does not provide parking space. Parking is possible on Kaikukatu street nearby (payment requiered) and free parking places can be found on Sörnäisten rantatie. BIKES Bikes can be left outside Galleria Kuvitus on Hämeentie.

Anna Salmi: Watermelon Sugar

14.5.–19.6.2021

Specializing in animated and editorial illustrations, Anna Salmi (b. 1992) combines digital and traditional painting techniques in her work. Her illustrations often feature references to pop culture mixed with an imaginary world dominated by pastel colours, glitter and powerful women. Salmi’s solo exhibition Watermelon Sugar features digital prints on textile with embroidered details.

Watermelon Sugar opens to the public on the website of the gallery on Friday, 14 May, at 12 noon. You can browse the exhibition online through pictures, texts and a podcast. One of the works in the virtual exhibition uses AR (Augmented Reality) and it has been made available for viewing through Adobe Aero mobile app. You can also experience the artworks on the spot when Galleria Kuvitus reopens its doors after a long time during the Art Fair Suomi Goes Galleries festival, held from 8–13 June.

Visiting the exhibition during COVID-19: The exhibition is open to the public during the Art Goes Galleries festival from 8–13 June or by appointment: galleria(at)kuvittajat.fi. Because our space is small, maximum of 4 visitors are admitted to the gallery at a time. The use of a face mask and hand sanitizer is required and safe distances must be maintained in our facilities.

Queer view

At the queer guided tours we observe the different possible counter-normative interpretations that the viewer can have about art and for example the way it portrays humanity. Occasionally the intention and identity of an artist has lead to queer interpretations but at this tour our main focus is on the viewer and their own thoughts. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions we pose, and we invite everyone to offer their own interpretations.

The tour is organised by Eidos ry, the association of art history students at the University of Helsinki.
