Gallery Halmetoja

Gallery Halmetoja is a curated art gallery specializing mainly in Finnish Contemporary Art. The gallery operates in collaboration with artists of various disciplines. The gallery’s exhibitions present artworks of diverse media, such as paintings, sculptures, photography and media art. Gallery Halmetoja holds exhibitions commenting on the future direction of contemporary art and appreciates visual artists who want to portray the world candidly and genuinely.

The entrance is not accessible, but it is possible to enter from the back with a wheelchair with assistance. Width of the back door: 115 cm. There are two steps that are 15 cm and 13 cm and a threshold that is 2 cm high. In the exhibition space there is one doorway that is 120 cm wide and has a threshold of 2 cm. Unfortunately there is no accessible toilet.

Sami Havia: While

In Sami Havia’s artworks, the relationship between the abstract and figurative has been wrenched into the absurd. His organic idiom hides a multitude of references and genuinely figurative elements are concealed behind and in between the abstract surfaces. Sometimes, it takes a keen eye to see them.

The human figures found in the artworks are observers who have been absorbed in the landscape. Their presentation borders on pseudo-naïve and is a perfect fit in Havia’s abstract and surreal visual expression. These figures accentuate playfulness, they are escapist passers-by of life. The visitor can empathize with and linger on their reverie.

Independent tour for children

Tue 8.6.2021, Wed 9.6.2021, Thu 10.6.2021, Fri 11.6.2021, Sat 12.6.2021, Sun 13.6.2021

The independent tours for children enable gallery visits according to your own schedule and with adults. At the gallery there are two different kinds of tasks for children. In the bingo younger children get to look for colours and shapes in the artworks. In the crossword puzzle children can search the pieces for words that go to the puzzle. By showing a completed task sheet to the gallery staff children will receive a sticker as a prize.

The activity is created by Eidos ry – the subject organization for art history students at University of Helsinki.

Please note that there is also other program at the gallery. We advice you to time your visit outside of the times of the other program.
