Gallery Becker

The Jyväskylä Artists’ Association’s gallery, Galleria Becker, is located in a quaint, wooden, 1903 house in the vicinity of the Jyväskylä University. The gallery presents 17 contemporary art exhibitions annually. The duration of each exhibition is three weeks.

The exhibition space is comprised of two separate rooms having a total of 56 m² area. The room height is 3.2 m. The surrounding courtyard and garden can also be used for exhibitions.

The art rental boutique of the Jyväskylä Artists’ Association operates at the quarters of Galleria Becker. Art rentals have been an important part of the association’s operation since 1985. The art rental boutique offers artwork for rent and for sale, from members of the association and other artists who have exhibited their work at Galleria Becker.
A collection of over 1000 artworks, including artist prints, paintings, photography and sculptures from over 100 artists is available in the boutique.

Artist Maija Kumpulainen-Sokka (born 1943, Jämsänkoski) turns 80 years old. She graduated from the Vienna Academy of Arts in 1968. She has lived in Jyväskylä since 1974.

“The starting point of my paintings, as well as my graphics, is the view, nature and observation. Seasons and different times of the day make my observations variable and very interesting and make you want to realize them by painting and drawing.”

Maisa Kivi: The brush of my soul

Maisa Kivi (born 1941, Ylivieska) lives and works in Saarijärvi.

“Retrospective: paintings and graphics from the 1960s to the present day.
The last five paintings were created this spring. First came the names of the poems, then the poems gradually, then the paintings.

The most popular theme of my ten years as an artist has been a person in motion, at rest, naked, clothed, dancing, physical, soul portrait. The techniques are diverse: woodcut, lithography, watercolor, oil- and acrylic paintings and guerda seca clay paintings technique.” Maisa Kivi

Minttu Esantytär presents a butoh-performance based on Maija Kumpulainen-Sokka’s exhibition’s idea: nature and perception. Breathing and its movement are everywhere, it supports us. If we think all movement is dance, is breathing dance? Does a moving, living and breathing plant dance? The performance is observations about breathing to the rhythm of a monstera deliciosa, observations about matching the inner and outer.
